Gardening For Kids
Help with prepping the garden and designing the space.
Prepping the garden may not be such a fun and exciting task to do but it is necessary when you are ready to start planting. Even though it’s not fun, it is an important task, and making it a little extra fun, including some prepping activities will make it better for the kids.
If you haven’t started prepping the seeds yet, here are a few ideas to help you get started.
- Milk jug greenhouse for seed starters
- Egg carton seed starters
- Lemon seed starter kids
- Garden seed bombs
Once you have the seed starters now comes the time to get the garden space ready to go. There are a lot of great activities the kids can do to help you prep your garden area.
- Let the kids help measure the garden to see the size it will be once it is finished. They can also use this time to choose a part of the garden for them to plant their own seeds or plants.
- Kids can help measure and plan where to place the plants. They can help figure out the spacing between each plant and decide what order those plants will go in. You can have them do this on the entire garden or just their section.
- This is a great time for them to learn about what amount of light and water the seeds or plants need so they can plan on the exact spots they will put them in.
- Let them have their own garden planner to help plan and track things happening in the garden. You can get a free planner and print off multiple copies so everyone can have their own.
Let the kids help you plant the garden.
Once the garden area has been made and prepped, it is time to start planting your fruits, flowers, or vegetables. This is a great opportunity to get the kids involved even more and they will have a blast playing in the dirt.
As the kids are planting their fruits and vegetables in the garden, you can help teach them more about the plants, how to take care of them, how much sunlight is needed, etc.
Teach them how to take care of the garden.
One of the most important things the kids can help with is tending to the garden and helping take care of the plants. Not only will they get a sense of accomplishment by watching the plants grow as they take care of them, but it will also help teach them about responsibility and cause and effect.
- Let the kids water the plants every few days or when the garden is dry. Show them what to look for so in the future they will know if the plants need water or not.
- Teach the kids how to compost and the benefits the compost has for the garden.
- Let them pull out the weeds. While this doesn’t sound like much fun, sometimes pulling things out of the dirt can be exciting for kids.
Have the kids decorate your new garden.
Now that the garden has been planted and the kids know more about what it takes to create and take care of a garden, it is time to add a little extra fun to the mix. Kids love creating crafts and it is a great way for them to get creative with some hands-on activities.
An easy craft to get them started would be to create some plant markers for the garden. This can be done with just about anything including rocks or popsicle sticks. They can decorate the items and write on them what the plant is, then set it next to the plant.
A few other activities the kids can do:
Gardening is an important life skill for children to learn. Not only will it help them learn more about the environment, but it will also help them learn to be more self-sufficient and may even get them interested in cooking. Cooking is certainly a skill that everyone needs to learn, and gardening can be a great way to get them to try new things or learn how to make their favorite food items.
For many kids, gardening may sound boring but including some of these fun activities that they can do for the garden will make it more exciting and fun for them.
