It’s the beginning of Day 4. I was going to write something last night but instead was scouring the forums over at Whole 30 for really a ridiculous amount of time, just absorbing information. There’s so much to learn! A few things I realize that I’m doing wrong.
1.Technically smoothies are not allowed. Their reasoning: Your body processes whole food differently than pureed food and it may not satisfy you as well. You can sneak an insane amount of fruit in them which should be limited to 2 servings a day. They don’t give you a proper fat/protein/carb ratio. They can seem too much like a treat or a dessert.
Ok, I get it. I really do. We’re supposed to be eating real whole food, limiting our fruit intake so we can break the sweet cravings, and learn how to eat a good balance of fat, carbs, and proteins at each meal. Reluctantly, I am giving this one up, although I may sneak a bit in on occasion if I make some for the kiddos. I pack mine with lots of kale and spinach, and berries, but I also use cherries, kiwi, pineapple, and sometimes oranges, apples or bananas. I always try to get the most colors into mine. They don’t really trigger sweet cravings for me, and they definitely don’t remind me of dessert. I really just make them because it’s an easy way to get a good kick of fruits and veggies in for me and the kiddos. I’m also toying with the thought of adding coconut oil for additional fat. I have also committed to having the smoothie with a side of protein so I’m getting the right nutrient balance, if I’m going to have one.
2. I’m supposed to be eating 3 meals a day, including something within a half hour of when I wake up.
This one is going to be hard. First off, I’m a coffee drinker, not a breakfast person. It’s just not my thing. I don’t do it to save calories or because I don’t have time. I just don’t want to eat in the mornings. I like my coffee for a few hours, sometimes all day, and I eat when I get hungry. Sometimes this means just one meal, sometimes two meals, or sometimes a meal and a snack. I’m not always good at the balancing nutrients either. I’m unsure how I’m going to proceed with this one. My feeling is, you eat when you’re hungry, and don’t eat when you’re not. However, I understand the science and reasoning behind the idea and for the sake of this whole experiment I’m going to try to eat three balanced meals a day, one within an hour of waking, and none of them being smoothies. I write this as I’m munching on my leftover taco bowl from last night. Yay me!
As I’m reading through the forums I constantly see people say, I do it this way, and I do it that way, and can I just modify this? My all-time one to loath is “I can’t do _____.” I hate reading those types of post! In my mind I’m screaming “It’s 30 days, just freakin do it!” Yet, I then find myself with the same kinds of struggles. So while I am missing my daily shot of honey, lemon, garlic and I don’t want to give up smoothies, or eat 3 times a day, for the sake of the experiment I’m willing to try. I might find that I love eating first thing in the morning, or I might skip breakfast my very first day off. We will have to see in 26 days how I feel. I think it’s important to constantly try new things and expand your comfort zone so that’s part of what I’m hoping to accomplish with this Whole 30.
Has anyone looked into it and do you have any thoughts or comments? Are you considering your own Whole 30 to tame the sugar dragon or help with chronic pain and inflammation or skin issues? I’d love to hear your feedback! If you’re interested in what I’ve been eating, check out my blog.
