This site started because of the lack of eco-friendly resources available in Oklahoma and to help people use what we have to create a greener and better state.

Since this site started there has been a lot of progress in Oklahoma but we still have a long ways to go. This is highlighted by the 2023’s Greenest States list that was put out by WalletHub.

Oklahoma did not do well and ended up ranked the 8th least green state. And this is a drop from 2022 when Oklahoma was the 9th least green state.

To determine the rankings, WalletHub looked at a total of 27 key metrics across three main categories: environmental quality, eco-friendly behaviors, and climate change contributions. Each metric was assigned a weight based on its importance, and the states were then ranked based on their overall scores.

The environmental quality category included metrics such as air and water quality, soil quality, and the number of hazardous waste sites. The eco-friendly behaviors category included factors such as the percentage of households that use renewable energy sources, the amount of green space per capita, and the number of LEED-certified buildings. The climate change contributions category included metrics such as greenhouse gas emissions per capita and the number of energy-efficient buildings.

Overall, the Greenest States list was designed to provide a comprehensive look at each state’s environmental performance, taking into account a range of different factors.

How Oklahoma Became the 8th Least Green State

Oklahoma ranked very low with many of the factors that were looked at. These are some of the rankings for the state:

  • 41st – Air Quality
  • 44th – Water Quality
  • 47th – LEED-Certified Buildings per Capita
  • 41st – Energy Consumption per Capita
  • 37th – Gasoline Consumption (in Gallons) per Capita

There are several ways that Oklahomans can help improve the state’s ranking on the WalletHub Greenest States list. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Advocate for environmental policies: Oklahomans can talk to their elected officials and push for policies that promote clean energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect natural resources. This can include things like promoting renewable energy sources, investing in public transportation, and supporting conservation efforts.
  2. Reduce energy consumption: Oklahomans can reduce their energy consumption by using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs, turning off electronics when not in use, and adjusting their thermostat to conserve energy.
  3. Promote sustainable transportation: Oklahomans can reduce their carbon footprint by carpooling, taking public transportation, biking, or walking when possible. By doing so, they can help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
  4. Reduce waste: Oklahomans can reduce their waste by recycling, composting, and using reusable bags and containers. This can help reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.
  5. Support environmental organizations: Oklahomans can support organizations that work to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices. This can include groups that work on issues like conservation, climate change, and environmental justice.

By taking these steps and encouraging others to do the same, Oklahomans can help improve the state’s ranking on the WalletHub Greenest States list and promote a more sustainable future for everyone.
