After greening her own home cleaning routine, Candace Lockett decided to start Nature Maid, which became Well Maid OKC in January 2010. They provide many great residential and commercial cleaning services and can even help reduce allergens in your home. Some services that caught our eyes were the aromatherapy package which includes having several items in your home spritzed with organic essential oils, and the peaceful pet add-on which includes your vacuuming of your pets bedding as well as a natural pest repellant treatment. We had the change to talk to Candace from Well Maid OKC and here is what she had to say.
GO: What made you decide to start Well Maid OKC?
Candace: We saw a definite need! After our third child was born and as we became “greener” as a family, we were distressed to find that green housecleaning services didn’t exist. Soaking the baby in a tub that smelled like toxic chemicals was not an option, but we didn’t think we should have to do without housecleaning help, either.
We should point out that we still believe someday all maid services will be green, so it’s been important to us to simply be the best in the business whether you are green or not. We don’t want to be great “for a green company”, we just want to be great!
GO: Why is it important to you that your business is eco-friendly?
Candace: Everything we endeavor to do as a family is eco-friendly, from composting and recycling to our stint with urban chickens. We couldn’t sleep at night if we made a living being part of the problem and not the solution.
Also, it’s a matter of education. A house that is maintained on a regular basis doesn’t need a toxic cleaning bomb to clean it. There are very effective non-toxic methods to do almost all cleaning in your home. Why expose yourself to unnecessary carcinogens?
GO: What’s the best advice about going green you have ever gotten?
Candace: It’s not all or nothing. Do what you can, when you can. Try recycling more. When that’s second nature, try giving up paper plates. Buy organic when you can. Add a compost pile eventually. Keep adding good green habits. The fact that we couldn’t start Well Maid with a fleet of Nissan Leaves did not keep us from starting Well Maid. We’ll get there.
GO: What’s your favorite green cleaning product?
Candace: It’s impossible to choose just one!
Razor Blade scrapers and microfiber cloths- We can often do mechanically what people are used to doing chemically.
Baking soda- It cleans as well as Comet, without the toxins.
Peppermint Oil- It smells fantastic!
GO: Why do you feel it’s important to support locally owned businesses?
Candace: If no one supported them, they wouldn’t be here! Where else can you get that kind of service? Talk to an owner? What does your town have that every other town in America doesn’t? Local businesses give local flavor.
GO: What is your favorite thing to do in Oklahoma?
Candace: Boat on the lakes, go to our nationally recognized Oklahoma City Zoo, eat!
GO: Other than your own business what is your favorite eco-friendly business in Oklahoma?
Candace: The Earth in Norman, Green Goodies on Classen Curve, The Wedge, Ludivine, Cafe Evoke – we love to eat!
