Packaging represents about 65% of household trash. Cleaning products can end up making up a lot of that waste. Cleaning products used to be pretty simple but these days we have all kinds of fancy options and more and more of the options are single-use products and create a lot of waste.

The big plastic jugs filled with laundry soap, dishwasher detergent, and all of the other bottles we end up from cleaning products can take up a lot of space in our trash and in our landfills. Thankfully creative solutions are being created all of the time to help us keep our home clean without trashing the planet.

Using those creative products and some simple zero waste tips we can all make a big difference without a lot of work or stress.

Use the Right Products

There are a lot of zero waste cleaning products out there these days but someone doesn’t work well or make cleaning more complicated. If the products don’t work well and don’t work with your lifestyle you are more likely to give up. They also need to be affordable.

That’s why products like the ones from the company Dropps are so great. They are little tabs that you use in your washer and dishwasher. They come in cardboard boxes, cost less than 22 cents per load, and they work. They are delivered to your door making zero waste cleaning easy.

For other cleaning look for products that avoid plastic and are simple. Hot soapy water will clean most things, don’t make it complicated.

Reuse the Packaging

You want to look for products that come in recyclable packaging but reusing an item is even better for the planet than recycling. Cardboard boxes like the ones used by Dropps can be used to ship gifts to friends, thrown in your compost bin, or for an upcycled project.

Glass bottles can be used to make your cleaners, for gifts, for vases, and for many other creative projects. Think creatively with any packaging you end up with. Make sure you have used it as much as you can before it goes into the recycling bin.

Make it Easy

Dropps offers subscriptions that save you money and time. Making sure you always have your zero waste cleaning supplies on hand will prevent stress or having to run out and buy conventional products to get by.

Looking for subscriptions like the ones offered by Dropps makes zero waste the easy option and most people give up on zero waste because of it being too time-consuming. Automating what you can get rid of that issue.

Skip Paper Towels

Americans love paper towels. We spend $5.7 billion per year for paper towelsat home, not including work or public bathrooms. The U.S. spends nearly as much as all other countries combined!

That’s not only a lot of money but it’s a lot of waste. We often forget that it’s not even just paper waste, it’s also plastic from the packaging.

You can make a big impact by ditch paper towels when cleaning. Instead use rags and cleaning cloths. They don’t take up much space in your laundry so they shouldn’t make much of an impact on your laundry.

You can even make unpaper towels that can be put on a paper towel holder and used much like paper towels but they are cloth and can be washed and used over and over again.

When your cleaning rags are in bad shape you can put them in a bin to use for really bad messes and dispose of them at that point. It’s best to use them as long as possible.
