Oklahomans can save money on electricity this summer with OG&E Smart Hours. It’s an easy way to save money and work to reduce your energy use.
Summer will be here before we know it. With the Oklahoma heat and the need for air conditioning, energy bills can go through the roof. But it isn’t only the scorching Oklahoma heat that can affect the prices; other weather conditions, time of year, and consumer demand also impact prices. Energy also costs more to generate and use during periods of high consumer demand.
OG&E is also seeking an annual increase of approximately $163.5 million to recover increased costs and improvements made since 2012. This would translate to an increase of nine percent compared to current rates for customers.
This will have many looking for ways to save money this summer on their energy bills. OG&E has one solution that can help you save money and find more ways to conserve. Through OG&E’s Smart Hours program, also known as Variable Peak Pricing (VPP), you can save money by using power when energy costs are lower.
What is the OG&E Smart Hours Program?
During the summer (June 1- Sept. 30), peak hours for high-energy use are between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. The prices during those hours vary based on demand. Each day, the OG&E Smart Hours program provides advance notice of the next day’s pricing. This allows you to plan when to use energy to save money.
Another great benefit to using Smart Hours is that your account shows how much energy you are using and projects next month’s bill. Your energy use is broken down by the hour. This allows you to figure out what is using the most energy in your home, which will help you further reduce energy costs
You can also see how much energy you are using compared to a similar-sized home in your area. You may find that you can do a lot more than what you are already doing to conserve energy.
You can also get a SmartTemp programmable thermostat when you sign up for Smart Hours. It can help you better control your energy use during the summer.
